San Francisco Opera | Strauss's Elektra

Elektra

What would you do if you knew who murdered your father? For Elektra, the answer is clear.

In the wake of the Trojan War, Elektra’s world has come unmoored. When her desire for justice becomes a blood lust, she pushes her fractured family to the brink of destruction.

Music by Richard Strauss | Libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal

Sung in German with English supertitles

THE BUZZ

"The night belonged to Christine Goerke. Her lament for her murdered father, Agamemnon, was agonizing, her anger white hot, her torment exquisite….It's hard to imagine better."

The Guardian

"Adrianne Pieczonka, as Chrysothemis, sings with ecstasy and sumptuous, gorgeous tone."

Opera News

“Martens’s metallic tone and fiercely etched phrasing admirably suggest both…rigid inflexibility of will and the private anguish that undermines it.”
