Wardrobe Assistant

PURPOSE:  To be responsible for assisting with all operations pertaining to the Wardrobe Department and the preparation of costumes for all stage use, in the theater and other locations as determined by management.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performances is present. Typical qualifications would be:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience working within a large running Wardrobe Department

  • Personal Dresser or Key Dresser experience

  • Experience organizing work crews of 5 or more individuals

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office applications, including spreadsheet and word processing

  • Ability to multitask under pressure, while leading and inspiring work crews

  • Ability to work independently; prioritize tasks; and exercise good judgment and initiative

  • Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities successfully

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with artists, staff, the public, and volunteers in a professional, confidential and tactful manner

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Reliable daily attendance and punctuality

  • Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner

  • Must be or become member of IATSE TWU Local 784

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Knowledge of Wardrobe running/production in repertory

  • Experience in meeting and exceeding the needs of all performers’ costume requirements

  • Fabrics and Fibers experience

  • Familiar with all applications of sewing machine operations

  • Knowledge of period/contemporary costume construction and repair

  • Assists in the supervision of all dressers required for all performances and day work

  • Prepares and runs day work and performance crews

  • Responsible for operations of Wardrobe Department in absence of Wardrobe Head of Department

  • Assists in maintaining the artistic integrity of all costumes worn in performance

  • Performs emergency repairs as needed

  • Arrange for the costuming of covers in the event of injury or illness in the absence of the Head of Wardrobe

  • Supervise in all load in and out of costumes

  • Supervise check in and set up of each production

  • Reconcile inventory and shipments of incoming productions with costume supervisors

  • Maintain current inventory and set up for each production in repertoire

  • Maintain lists of items moving to and from Costume Studio and dry cleaners

  • Attend dress rehearsals, and performances as required

  • Coordinate laundry needs for each production with Laundry Assistant

  • Train in the operation of industrial laundry equipment in order to be able to cover the position in an emergency situation

  • Assists in establishing all required preparation and organization for running rehearsals and performances

  • Familiarization with all upcoming productions

  • Assist in development of the mechanics of costume quick changes, and dressing strategies as appropriate when directed to do so by the Head of Wardrobe

  • Coordination with Wig Department, stage management, props, electrics, for the set up requirements of change areas, booths, and locations

  • In conjunction with the Head of Wardrobe organize the schedule

  • Attend all costume and production meetings for each production as assigned

  • Participate in the orientation and training of wardrobe crew

  • Attend weekly meetings

  • Provide daily summary of Department actives, changes, and requirements

  • Maintains record of stock inventory and storage locations of wardrobe goods

  • Monitors compliance of the Union Working Rules and House rules

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs other job related duties as assigned
